The Dishwasher Humming

At my MOPS group the other day a friend made the comment that everytime she smells corn cooking she thinks of Tom Brokaw.

Or maybe it was everytime she hears Tom Brokaw she thinks of corn.

Here's why: Growing up her mom would have the nightly news on as she was cooking dinner. The smell of dinner and Tom Brokaw's voice are forever connected in my friend's mind.

That happens to me too.

The sound of the dishwasher at night (when the lights are dim) always takes me back to my Grandma's house.

I picture myself sitting at her table. The kitchen spotless. A game of scrabble spread out in front of us. Lights dim except the one above us. Periodic conversation. The dishwasher humming in the background.

Simple sounds, simple times and sweet memories from the past.

I'm curious...
What sounds, smells and experiences are connected in your mind?

Every time I smell gasoline, I think of airports and flying to America (from Japan) to spend summers with Grandpa and Grandma. I LOVE the smell of gasoline...it brings back some of th best memories in my lifetime!!!

Each time I hear music from the mid-70's I am taken back to our kitchen where you could find me making bread or cookies while the radio played in the background.

When I see the bowl mom would use to mix cookie dough it takes me right back to my childhood. I remember the sound of the wooden spoon as she mixed the dough. Can I lick the spoon - PLEEEEASE? My sister knows I have 'dibs' on that bowl!!!

Tom Brokaw was on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, (NPR on Sat Morning) while I was driving home from Sam's Club..I swear there was corn cooking in the backseat... :-) I am totally enamoured with voices. Thanks, Dear!!

Lately I have enjoyed the sound of the furnace turing on while I'm stilling laying in bed because it reminds me of Christmas morning...all is quiet...everyone is waiting to see who's up first...it's just so peaceful!

My mom says that the smell of Caress soap makes her think of me, because that is what they gave her in the hospital to use the 1st time she showered after my birth.

When ever I hear the Red Hot Chili Peppers CD "By the way" it always makes me think of my older son Cole. My husband and I were really into that CD when I was pregnant with Cole.

Finally for my trip down memory land...the smell of bacon cooking always makes me think of my childhood and my mom making breakfast while we slept away the morning.

this isn't at all sentimental and pretty obvious, but when I smell fresh, cut grass, it transforms me back to one of many high school jobs mowing all the old ladies lawns in the neighborhood :)

When I smell a certain toilet cleaner, it still makes me feel nauseous, because we used it when I was so sick with morning sickness during my first pregnancy!

I've been a lurker for a while but I don't think I've commented before.

When I was little, my dad was a farmer and we had pigs. I didn't appreciate the smell much then, but as I have gotten older and my dad is now gone, that wonderful scent of pig manure takes me back. In one sniff I am 5 years old again, running in the yard as the sun is setting, playing hide and seek with my siblings and my dad.
